Why are UK business blog posts getting less traffic now compared to a year ago?

I’ve noticed that my business blog is getting much less traffic than it did a year ago, even though I’m still publishing content regularly. Has anyone else experienced this, and what do you think is causing the decline?

You're definitely not alone. During my three years working as an SEO specialist at a digital marketing agency in Birmingham, I've seen this trend across businesses in various industries throughout the UK. Many clients continue publishing blogs consistently, yet organic traffic isn't growing the way it did a year ago.

The biggest reason is that search behaviour has changed. Google now answers many informational queries directly through AI Overviews, featured snippets, and other search features, reducing the number of users who actually click through to websites. At the same time, competition has increased significantly as AI tools have made content creation easier, resulting in thousands of similar articles being published every day.

I've also noticed that Google's recent algorithm updates place much greater emphasis on content quality, first-hand experience, topical authority, and genuine expertise rather than simply publishing frequently. Some blogs that once ranked well have lost visibility because competitors now offer more comprehensive, helpful, or up-to-date content.

Other factors that commonly contribute include:

  • Outdated articles that haven't been refreshed
  • Weak internal linking
  • Declining search demand for certain topics
  • Poor Core Web Vitals and user experience
  • Search intent changing over time

From my experience, businesses that regularly update existing content, focus on answering real customer questions, strengthen topical authority, and diversify traffic through social media, email marketing, and video content are adapting far better than those relying solely on publishing more blog posts.
