How much does it actually cost to build a website in the UK?

I’m planning to build a website for my business in the UK, but I’m finding it difficult to understand the actual cost involved. Prices seem to vary a lot depending on the type of website, features, and whether you hire a freelancer or an agency. I’m not sure what a realistic budget looks like for a small business website, especially when considering design, development, and ongoing maintenance.

How much did it cost you to build your website, and what factors affected the pricing? Any real experiences or estimates would be really helpful.

From my experience, the cost can vary quite a bit depending on what you actually need and who you hire.

When I built my business website in the UK, I spent around £1,500 to £2,500 working with a freelancer. That included design, development, and a few basic features like contact forms and SEO setup. It was a fairly standard small business website, around 5 to 8 pages.

Before that, I got quotes from agencies, and most of them were in the range of £3,000 to £8,000+ for something similar. The difference mainly came down to the level of customization, strategy, and ongoing support they offered.

What really affected the pricing for me was:

  • The number of pages and design complexity
  • Whether I needed custom features or just a standard setup
  • Content creation (I had to pay extra for copywriting)
  • SEO and performance optimization
  • Ongoing maintenance and updates

I also realized that things like hosting, domain, and small add-ons can increase the cost over time, even if the initial build seems affordable.

If you’re going for a simple, clean website, you can probably get it done for £1,000 to £3,000. But if you want something more custom or scalable, it can easily go higher.

My advice would be to be very clear about your requirements from the start, because adding things later can quickly increase the budget.
