Google Business Profile reviews disappeared. What causes this and can they be restored?

I recently noticed that some reviews have disappeared from my Google Business Profile, and I’m not sure why. Has anyone experienced this before? What causes Google reviews to disappear, and is it possible to get them restored?

I understand how stressful it can feel when Google Business Profile reviews suddenly disappear, especially after putting in real effort to earn customer feedback. In my experience, this happens more often than many business owners realise, and it does not always mean the reviews are gone forever. There are several reasons why reviews may disappear, and in many cases, they can come back.

One of the most common reasons I have seen is Google’s spam detection system. Google regularly removes reviews that it believes look suspicious, fake, or against its policies. Sometimes even genuine reviews get filtered out by mistake. For example, if several reviews are posted within a short period, come from newly created Google accounts, contain repeated wording, or appear unusual to Google’s system, they may be temporarily removed. I have also seen reviews disappear when customers leave feedback from the same Wi Fi network or location, which can accidentally trigger spam filters.

Another reason could be changes made to the Google Business Profile itself. If the business name, address, phone number, category, or ownership details have recently changed, Google may temporarily affect reviews while updating the profile. In some cases, duplicate listings, suspended profiles, or merged business locations can also lead to missing reviews. I always recommend checking whether any recent profile edits happened before assuming the worst.

Sometimes the issue is actually on the customer’s side. If a reviewer deletes their Google account, removes their review, violates Google policies, or has their account suspended, the review may disappear automatically. This is something many business owners overlook because the change happens without any notification.

The good news is that yes, reviews can sometimes be restored. I have seen missing reviews return after a few days or weeks, especially when the issue is related to a Google system update or temporary glitch. The first thing I usually do is check whether the review count dropped suddenly or whether specific reviews vanished. Then I review the business profile for recent changes and make sure everything is accurate and compliant with Google guidelines.

If the reviews do not return, I would contact Google Business Profile support and raise the issue. Google has a review management support process where businesses can report missing reviews for investigation. While Google does not guarantee recovery, I have seen genuine reviews restored when they were wrongly filtered or removed by mistake.

From my experience, the best approach is not to panic immediately. I usually give it a little time, check for profile issues, and then contact support if nothing changes. At the same time, I continue encouraging genuine customer reviews consistently so that one temporary drop does not have a major impact on the business overall.
