I’ve been focusing more on creating high-quality content for SEO, but I keep hearing mixed opinions about backlinks. Some say backlinks are still essential for ranking, while others believe content alone can drive results now.

Do backlinks still play a major role in SEO in 2026, or is strong content enough? What has worked for you in terms of ranking and traffic?

I’ve been working in the SEO industry since 2013, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: backlinks still matter in 2026, but not in the way they used to.
Back in the early days, it was almost a numbers game. More links = better rankings. But with updates like Google Penguin and the evolution of Google Helpful Content Update, things have shifted dramatically.
From my experience today, content alone is not enough, even if it’s high quality.
Here’s how I see it now:
- Content is your foundation
Without strong, relevant, and helpful content, nothing else works. Google has become very good at understanding intent and quality. - Backlinks are still a trust signal
Think of backlinks as endorsements. When authoritative websites link to you, it tells Google your content is credible. That signal still plays a major role in rankings. - Quality > quantity (more than ever)
One strong, relevant backlink can outweigh dozens of low-quality ones. In fact, poor backlinks can still hurt you. - Topical authority matters
It’s not just about getting links—it’s about getting links from websites within your niche or industry. - Brand signals and mentions are rising
Even unlinked mentions and overall brand authority are becoming part of the bigger picture.
In competitive markets like UK, I’ve rarely seen a page rank at the top without a solid backlink profile; no matter how good the content is.
So no, content alone isn’t enough. But backlinks without great content won’t work either. The real success in 2026 comes from combining both strategically.

From my experience, backlinks still matter in 2026, but they don’t work the way they used to. I used to think that just publishing good content would be enough, but that wasn’t really the case, especially in competitive niches.
What I’ve seen is that content is the foundation, but backlinks are what help that content actually get visibility. I’ve published well-written articles that didn’t rank at all until I built a few relevant backlinks. Once those links came in, rankings and traffic started improving.
At the same time, it’s not about quantity anymore. A few high-quality, relevant backlinks have worked much better for me than getting a lot of random ones. Google seems to care more about context, authority, and how natural the links look.
That said, I’ve also had pages rank with minimal backlinks when the content was very specific, well-structured, and matched search intent perfectly. So content definitely carries more weight now than before.
