Can a hacked WordPress site be fully recovered or is it easier to start fresh?

My WordPress website was recently hacked, and I’m trying to decide whether it’s worth cleaning and recovering the site or if it would be safer to rebuild everything from scratch. Has anyone been through this situation before?

From my experience, a hacked WordPress site can often be fully recovered, so I would not rush into starting from scratch immediately. Whether recovery is possible really depends on how badly the website has been compromised and how quickly the issue is caught. I have seen many hacked websites restored successfully without losing years of SEO work, content, or rankings, but I have also come across situations where rebuilding was the smarter option.

The first thing I usually look at is the extent of the damage. Sometimes the hack is fairly contained, such as malware hidden in a plugin, spam pages being created, strange redirects, or suspicious admin users added to the site. In cases like these, I have found that a proper clean up can fully recover the website. This often includes removing malicious files, cleaning the database, updating WordPress core files, changing passwords, reinstalling themes and plugins, and closing any security gaps that allowed the attack in the first place.

Backups make a huge difference. If I have access to a clean backup from before the hack happened, recovery becomes much easier. I can restore the site, scan for vulnerabilities, update everything properly, and secure it to reduce the chance of another attack. However, I never blindly restore an old backup without checking it carefully because sometimes malware has already been sitting quietly on the site for weeks without anyone noticing.

That said, there are situations where starting fresh feels like the safer and faster choice. If the website has been deeply infected for a long time, the database is heavily compromised, multiple core files are altered, SEO spam has spread across hundreds of pages, or Google has flagged the site for malware repeatedly, rebuilding can sometimes save more time and risk in the long run. I have also recommended a fresh start when the website was already outdated, poorly built, or running on old themes and plugins that are difficult to secure.

One thing I always tell website owners is not to panic and delete everything immediately. A hacked site does not automatically mean it is beyond saving. In many cases, a proper forensic clean up can recover the website and protect the SEO authority and content you have already built over time. Before deciding whether to rebuild or recover, I would always assess the level of damage, check backups, review security logs, and understand exactly how the hack happened. That usually gives a much clearer answer on the best next step.
